Huawei SUN5000-MAP0: the new-generation hybrid inverter

Smart Energy Controller SUN5000-8/12K-MAP0 is Huawei’s new series of hybrid inverters for the residential market with three-phase grid connection. These products introduce several significant innovations compared to previous models.
Let’s explore the features of this new generation of inverters and the differences from the previous SUN2000 series.

Compatibility and power optimizers

One of the main differences from the SUN2000 series is that, with the new SUN5000 series, all modules must be equipped with compatible power optimizers. Depending on the module used, the following models can be chosen:

  • SUN2000-450W-P2
  • SUN2000-600W-P
  • MERC-600W-PA0

RSD and AFCI safety features

Thanks to the optimizers, the inverter is equipped with RSD (Rapid Shutdown) and AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) functions, both designed to enhance installation safety:

  • Rapid Shutdown (RSD): stops the electrical current flowing from photovoltaic modules, reducing voltage to safe levels in emergency situations or when the inverter is turned off. This feature is crucial for the safety of firefighters and emergency teams working near the modules. It complies with the NEC 2017 American standard, one of the highest safety standards in the world.
  • Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI): compliant with the UL 1699B-2018 American standard, this feature quickly interrupts the current flow from the modules in the event of electrical arcs caused by cable damage or improperly crimped connectors.

Additionally, for enhanced safety, both the photovoltaic module connectors and the battery connectors are equipped with temperature sensors.

Battery compatibility and performance

Both inverter variants (8 kW and 12 kW) are compatible with Huawei Luna2000-S0 batteries (with 5 kWh battery modules) and Luna2000-S1 batteries (with 7 kWh battery modules). The charging power reaches 12 kW, varying based on battery capacity, while the discharge power is:

  • 8.8 kW for the 8 kW model
  • 12 kW for the 12 kW model

These high charge/discharge performances, combined with the SmartGuard-63A-T0 panel and the ability to manage asymmetric loads, allow for full-home backup, supporting both single-phase and three-phase loads. In contrast, the previous SUN2000 three-phase series could only handle single-phase loads using external panels.

In backup mode, the continuous load can be 110% of the nominal power, with peaks up to 200% for up to 10 seconds. The transfer speed from grid to off-grid is only 20 ms, meaning that only the most sensitive loads may briefly turn off, while standard appliances will not be affected by the switch.

Protections and reliability

Like other inverters, the SUN5000-8/12K-MAP0 models come with a factory-installed disconnector and essential DC-side protections, including a Type II DC surge protector compliant with IEC61643-11, the same standard used for the AC-side surge protector.

With a wide operating range from -25°C to +60°C, IP66 protection rating, and the ability to be installed up to 4,000 meters above sea level, this natural convection-cooled inverter is suitable for even the harshest environments.

Connectivity and integration

Communication with the FusionSolar monitoring portal is ensured via built-in WLAN, with the option to add a dongle for Ethernet or 4G connection.

The inverter is also compatible with EMMA-02, Huawei’s energy manager, making it an ideal solution for today and tomorrow’s homes. With seamless control over EV chargers, heat pumps, and other household loads, this system is designed to eliminate electricity bills while also reducing environmental impact.
